It was 1991. He had been working for the same company for nearly four years. They had just finished paying for him to get a college degree. He was getting good performance reviews and had just implemented some processes that helped his team get our work done much faster and with less work. Things were looking up when the big boss called Tom into his office. He figured it was for something good.
“Our primary customer just cut their orders by 10%. We have to make the same cut in our costs. Here is your severance check.”
He was in shock. Things seemed to be going great and suddenly, he was out of a job.
In his mind he kept seeing myself at some gathering and someone asks “what do you do?”
In his mind he could hear myself saying, “I am out of work.”
Then, comes an awkward pause. They look down at their drink uncomfortably. At a loss for words. They unconsciously a half step back. Suddenly, they seem to need get away like many people do today when you tell them you just tested positive for COVID-19.

This wasn’t the first time he had suffered a job loss. But, it was the first time he had a family depending on him to keep them from living on the street. The thought of losing his home, living out of a car, or admitting defeat and moving in with his parents were nearly overwhelming.
When you lose your job, it is like a big punch in the gut. Losing your job threatens both your identity and your ability to provide the basics of life – food, shelter, and security. Unfortunately, Tom didn’t have the luxury of a big savings account to live off while spending months looking for just the right job. He couldn’t take time to feel sorry for himself, or pursue some buried passion in hopes of an eventual payout.

Tom went home and broke the news to his wife.
“What are we going to do?” she asked, a hint of desperation in her voice as they listened to their three children playing in the next room.
“Find a new job.” He answered with a lot more confidence than he was feeling. He knew he would be competing for a job with his coworkers who were also getting the axe. Lots of qualified competition would make it harder to get a new job.
That weekend, he updated his résumé and scoured job listings everywhere he could find them, looking for leads for jobs that closely, or even remotely, matched his skills. By Monday morning he had a list of leads put together. Using his home computer, he sent out about a hundred inquiries. One to each of the job leads he had found. Each inquiry included a custom cover letter and a copy of his updated résumé. Then, instead of just sitting back and waiting for results, he started reaching out to people he knew. He let them know he was looking for a new job.
He never heard back from most of those job inquiries. A few sent him a form letter. You know the one. "Thanks for applying but, no thanks." That isn’t how they say it, but you know what they mean.
About a half dozen sent him rejection letters saying they had already filled the position, but they would keep his résumé on file. You’ve probably seen that one too. he didn’t hold his breath waiting for a call. He rolled his eyes at their polite lies and moved on.
Another half-dozen said they wanted to interview him! He had been trained in how to interveiw so he was pretty good with interviews. Things were looking up. Not every interview hits a home run, however, from those interviews, he got three job offers.
At this point you may be thinking he had it made. Unfortunately, each offer had some significant downsides.
Accepting any of them would mean moving his family. They would have to sell the house they had bought only a few years before, probably taking a loss. They would have to find a new home but the new jobs were in areas with much higher costs of living. So the new pay check wouldn't go as far as the old one and to find an affordable house they would have to buy further away and he would have a longer commute to work each day, taking another bite out of the paycheck.
Still, you do what you have to do. Right? Then, it happened.
A friend of his who knew he was looking for a job introduced him to a friend of his. They met. Tom listened as he talked about his business, asking some questions along the way. Tom told him he would like to meet again. Tom had some ideas he wanted to share. They set an appointment to talk at greater length. By the end of their next conversation he had offered Tom a job.
They wouldn’t have to move. Tom could work from home part of the time. And the pay was more than his prior job had been paying.
This may sound like a lucky break. It was a break, but it wasn’t luck. That wasn’t even the first time Tom used The Successful Job Seeker's proprietary system to get him the job he wanted.
